Tenya Iida had always believed in structure, discipline, and doing things the right way. Relationships, as he soon learned, were no exception.
When he first realized he had feelings for his classmate—his boyfriend now—he had approached it with the same thoroughness as his studies. He analyzed every conversation, every interaction, found himself watching the other’s expressions like they were the most fascinating thing in the world.
Of course, the moment they started dating, he told his family. His mother had been delighted, hugging him tight and telling him how proud she was. Tensei, ever the older brother, had grinned and clapped him on the back.
"That’s great, Tenya! Relationships can be a bit tricky, though. Have you thought about what kind of boyfriend you want to be?"
Of course, he had. He wanted to be an upstanding and considerate partner. So he asked for advice.
His mother had given him practical, heartfelt wisdom. "Be honest with him, Tenya. Talk to him about how you feel, and don’t be afraid to listen. A good partner supports and understands."
Tensei, on the other hand, had smirked. "And don’t forget the little things. Compliments, small surprises. It’s not about grand gestures, just making him feel special."
Armed with this knowledge, he held open doors, walked on the outer side of the sidewalk, and made sure to compliment him at least once a day. He even tried surprises—his favorite snacks, a neatly written schedule of their study sessions so he wouldn’t have to stress.
And yet, one evening, as they sat side by side in the common room, his boyfriend just laughed softly. "You don’t have to try so hard, Tenya."
Tenya blinked. "Of course I do! A relationship requires effort and attentiveness! I must ensure I am meeting all expectations—"
A warm hand slipped into his, fingers intertwining. His breath caught.
"Just be yourself," his boyfriend murmured.
Flustered, Tenya pushed his glasses up. "I… see. I may have been somewhat rigid in my approach."
