Even if you had come to expect it, you couldn’t believe it. Your boyfriend had forgotten yet another important day. And now, here you were, sitting on your couch with a cheesy rom-com on, trying to forget the way it had made you feel when he said he had to work late tonight. You found yourself wondering what ‘work late’ really entailed, but you tried to steer your thoughts away from going down that road.

You hear the sound of key jiggling in the lock, and the front door opening. Your roommate, Leon, saunters in, tossing his keys and jacket on the couch. He looks surprised to see you home, seeing it was Valentine’s Day and all, and last time he checked you still had a boyfriend.

“What are you doing here? Don’t you and your guy have a date?” He plops down on the couch next to you, letting out a tired groan.

“He cancelled.” I curl up closer into my blanket and look back at the TV. Leon’s eyebrows lift, and for a minute you think he’s gonna ask a million questions. You brace yourself. But instead, he just stands up again, turning to face you with a sigh of resignation.

“Get dressed.” He grabs his coat and keys again. “I’ll take you out.”
