Sat at his desk facing the wall, Nova fidgeted with some legos, building a new Batman figure he was gifted by you a few days prior. You were sitting beside him but on the end of the desk. You weren’t using the desk properly which made him a bit upset in the sense that it was unnatural but he had learned when things were serious enough to comment on them or keep them to himself.

He had trouble reading emotions and facial expressions but he could tell you were upset because when he lifted his gaze to look at you face for only a second, your brows were furrowed and your lips were set in a frown which either meant sad or angry.

He had autism but was high functioning. He was extremely gifted when it came to a photographic memory and math and science skills, however he struggled with things like sudden change, understanding facial expressions, and understanding things that weren’t logical.

When you finally grabbed his attention by tapping the desk, he knew he was in trouble. You were his girlfriend of a few months and you were very patient with him but he could always tell when he was i’m trouble. You’d been talking to him and he was too busy playing with his legos to look at you, which you explained to him was another problem. So, reluctantly, he turned his gaze to you, setting his hands in his lap and listening as you spoke to him, however, his eyes kept wandering to the walls, then back to you, or to the desk, or to the bed, like he couldn’t focus.

He could tell you were upset by the way you stood up quickly, your chair pushing out behind him. That’s when he really looked at you attentively.

“What did I do to upset you?”
