Mother's Day was a reminder of the night everything went to Hell for Dante.
He would pass by shops with special bouquets of flowers and pink gifts. Pass by people picking presents with care for their mothers, for the mother figures in their lives.
But his mother wasn't here to accept the pretty daises he used to pick for her from the courtyard when he was a boy. And Vergil wasn't here to help make little Happy Mother's Day cards with him anymore.
Dante thought he'd never enjoy that date again. Until you came into his life.
He never meant to fall for someone. Especially a divorced lady much older than him with a seven year old son. Yet, he did. And his love for you became a huge part of his life that didn't feel like it was going to shit. Especially when Mother's day came around.
The morning began with waking up to breakfast in bed.
Your son gleamed at the edge of your bed with his little self-made Mother's Day Card like always, that excited little smile warming his youthful features. But he didn't surprise you alone anymore. Now, Dante would crouch beside him with an equally excited smile, a boyish gleam shining his blue eyes as he held a gigantic bouquet of your favourite flowers.
The evening ended with take out ─ pizza being your choice since your son had been influenced by Dante's unhealthy diet choices. Though you relented to donuts for desert, let Ezekiel stay up past his bedtime for a family movie to end another cherished day this year.
Your little boy knocked out in Dante's lap before the film even rolled it's credits, and so the demon hunter carried him up the stairs of your home in his strong arms to tuck him into those robot themed bedsheets with care.
In your bedroom, you finished up in the joint bathroom for the night. You stepped out in your nightdress, hair loose on your shoulders. Your gaze flicked towards Dante, standing beside the edge of your bed with his arms behind his back as if hiding something. An almost bashful eagerness in his baby blues softened his features.
A soft smile stretched your relaxed features.
"What're you doing, sweetie?" You questioned with bemused suspicion, sauntering closer. The flowy hem of your babydoll swayed softly with your hips.
"Nothin', Ma." Dante answered softly, his smile growing. He leaned down when you were close enough, pressing a soft peck to your lips. He pulled back just an inch, eyes soft with a smitten warmth. "Just waned to tell you Happy Mother's Day."
You laughed softly, placing your perfectly manicured hands over his chest.
"You've wished me a lot today." You hummed, eyes warm with affection. "More than Ezekiel. And I'm not your mother." You chuckled softly.
"Yeah, you are. You're my mommy." Dante returned teasingly, leaning down to steal another warm peck.
"Idiot." You huffed against his lips, returning his kiss again before pulling away with a soft sound. "C'mon, what're you hiding?" You questioned, eyeing him with a wary smirk.
Those grey-blues softened, a slight pink dust colouring his cheeks.
His hands paused behind his back.
"A present." He murmured then, bringing his arms forth.
Your gaze dropped to the velvet lined gift box he held in one hand between your bodies.
Your heart almost skipped a beat.
"Please tell me you're not proposing." You murmured in surprise, gaze flicking back up to his in warm panic.
Dante barked a quiet laugh, shaking his head at your wide eyes. "No, Ma." He chuckled, fingers gently prying the box open.
Your gaze dipped to the jewellery piece nestled inside.
Atop a cushioned pillow, an elegant diamond bracelet gleamed softly, the polished gold catching on the lamp's dim glow from your nightstand.
Your breath caught.
"Baby..." You murmured softly, disbelief and awe warming your voice.
Your tone made his heart beat a little faster.
"I wanted to get you somethin' real nice... 'cause you're an amazin' single Mom. And you deserve everything for being the best at it." He murmured with warm sincerity, tone almost bashful.
