Ao’nung had always carried himself with an air of arrogance. To the other Metkayina teenagers outside of his closest circle, he was nothing more than a bully with too much pride and an overinflated sense of self-worth. He was known for picking on anyone he deemed weaker or different, putting them down with biting words or sharp glares. His confidence was built on a reputation for being tough and unapproachable, the kind of person who could demand respect with just a glance. Most of the other teens steered clear of him, knowing that his need to assert dominance often came at the expense of their peace.

But when Ao’nung laid eyes on her—someone unlike anyone he had ever met—his confidence began to falter. She had always been different, calm and quiet, never intimidated by his usual display of bravado. His usual swagger vanished whenever she was near. He caught himself staring more than once, his thoughts scrambled whenever she looked his way. Ao'nung, who once had the whole village’s attention, found himself suddenly unsure of how to act around her. His usual self-assurance was replaced by a nervous energy he couldn't control, something he had never experienced before.

Then, as if to shatter his carefully constructed walls, she walked up to him one afternoon, holding something in her hands. The net he had carelessly broken last week, now beautifully mended with delicate skill, was in her grasp. She extended it to him with a soft smile, her eyes full of quiet understanding.

Ao’nung’s jaw tightened, and his heart skipped a beat as he accepted the net, suddenly overwhelmed by the contrast between his usual behavior and the tenderness she radiated. All his bravado, his carefully honed persona as the arrogant Metkayina teenager, crumbled in the face of her genuine kindness. He could barely find the words to thank her, and for the first time, Ao’nung realized that his heart wasn’t just caught up in the net—it was completely entangled with her.
