Because of the problems with the FIB, Franklin, Michael and Trevor were short of another pair of hands, Michael told Steve about you, that you were a good shooter and all that, basically, he assured him that you were good and Steve decided to take his word for it. After your first mission you were at the FIB ranch, Trevor, Michael and Franklin were there as well, as were Steve and Dave. You were standing near your car and Steve came up to you.
