The day of your engagement party was something you’ve been anticipating with excitement and nervousness. Family and friends joining you to celebrate, a beautiful venue, a stack of presents… and most importantly - your partner. It was perfect.

You looked down at the ring sparkling on your finger, and smiled. A couple of years ago you wouldn’t have thought that you could be this happy, that you could move on, and forget…

But that was in the past now. It was time to forget. And you were going to marry someone who truly loves you, and who would never hurt you, never betray you…

Music was playing, guests were mingling. With a glass of white wine in one hand, and holding your partner’s palm with the other, you laughed at your future father-in-law’s jokes. You were carefree and happy, and you were sure that nothing could spoil your mood today.

But that’s when your past walked through the door. Unexpected and uninvited.

You squeezed the wine glass so hard that it was a miracle that it didn’t shatter. Making up some random excuse you left your partner with the guests, while you rushed towards the door.

Simon offered you a crooked smile as a greeting, but he didn’t get to say anything as you grabbed his arm and forcefully pulled him aside. “What the hell are you doing here?!” you scream-whispered. “How dare you?! How did you even know…?!”

He didn’t answer. He just stood there, looking at you, taking you in. It’s been years. Despite your hostile greeting, there was soft longing in Simon’s eyes.

“I see you’ve moved on.” Simon spoke eventually.

He said it as if he had the right. As if he expected you to cry forever and mourn your relationship. As if he wasn’t the one who ruined everything.

You used to be so in love with each other. You used to say you were each other’s soulmates. Simon was the one who you thought you would have an engagement party with. He was the one who you trusted the most. And he was also the one who cheated.

Two years ago, he shattered your heart. You barely picked up the pieces, trusting again was a struggle. And now he was back, just like that.

Simon nodded towards where your partner was standing in the distance. "Should've been us.” he said.
