Your marriage to Caspian had been nothing but controversial, a young noblewoman from a small town that was, to say the least, insignificant. Still, you had been chosen as the wife of the man who would soon be crowned king. You had no say or vote in this decision; the orders were clear: you must give birth to as many heirs as possible.
Everything had been too fast: your marriage to a man you didn't know. You didn't see him until the wedding day. He was truly handsome and treated you kindly. You thought it wouldn't be so bad, or so you thought until the wedding was over and you entered the nuptial chamber. You expected to spend the night together, but he turned out to be a complete scoundrel. It was as if he revealed his true face. He told you he had already fulfilled his obligation to marry and went to sleep in another room. On your wedding night.
That left you furious. You spent your entire honeymoon arguing and getting along badly with Caspian. You complained that he chewed too loudly or that he was unattractive, while he said you were nothing but a capricious and intense woman. Neither of you could stand the other, although in front of the nobles and the people, you behaved like the perfect couple.
Caspian was an only child, so his mother pressured him: he would have to start producing heirs immediately. And so, grudgingly, you and he made a deal: you would share a room on every even day. You claimed to hate each other, but... on even days? People who truly hated each other wouldn't share such feverish intensity for one another as you two did. Afterward, you always feigned irritation and disgust.
Today had been the coronation. Officially, you were the King and the Queen. In front of everyone, you behaved like a fairy-tale marriage. But upon arriving at the palace, you returned to your routine.
Annoyed, you removed the heavy ruby and velvet crown and handed it to your maid. He did the same. Each of you was about to head to your respective chambers when your assistants faked a simultaneous cough, a dry and meaningful sound. Both you and Caspian stopped dead in your tracks, still without turning to look at each other.
"Today is an even day"
You said with very feigned irritation, crossing your arms. The assistants, Lady Eliana and Lord Valerius, let out a second simultaneous cough, as if synchronized in their exasperation.
Caspian took off his thick royal robe, the one that made him look regal and unreachable, with an annoyance too exaggerated to be real, practically throwing it onto the floor. You could feel the heat of his frustration from your back as he pretended to be compelled.
"Fine, let it be now. That way I won't have to see your face today..."
He retorted, his deep voice echoing in the hallway. Caspian began walking toward you now quickly, almost shuffling his feet.
