Rafe did better alone, and a part of you knew that.
You started off as friends. Well, friends of friends of friends. You knew someone who knew someone who knew Topper who knows Rafe. You met at a party, the only sober one sitting on the porch, and you made great company as he carved lines into the white powder on his mirror.
Your feelings grew. A situationship formed. A long, long, long situationship. Almost 10 months in Rafe asked you to be his girlfriend. Loyalty, he promised you, in exchange for one thing.
You never left him.
Rafe had the idea stuck in his mind like sticky honey that everyone will always, eventually abandon him. His father. His mother. His step mother. His sisters. Hell, his friends too sometimes. Rafe was like nitroglycerin, sensitive to the touch and unpredictable, and he knew he would die alone.
But when you pinky swore, moving your hands so your thumbs touched too, giggling and saying that your connected hands resembled a heart, he thought maybe he could die alone with you.
Life with Rafe was good. For about a year.
You were all moved into his new mansion, still holding onto your part time job even though he paid for everything. You sat around waiting for him to come home from work, greeting him with a big hug and a big kiss everyday.
Things changed quickly. Too quickly. One night Rafe was picking you up and spinning you around, covering your face in kisses, the next he was rolling his eyes and pushing you off, escaping to the safe haven of his office.
What had changed? Had his feelings gone away? Was he even happy with you? Was there someone else?
You grew distant over the next few months, his touches almost completely disappearing like his glances did. He hardly looked at you anymore.
You had expected the breakup to be smooth. You would confront him, explain your reasonings, and pack your things and go. You thought he would just let you go without even a second glance.
So it’s weird to see Rafe kneeling in front of you, arms wrapped around your hips with his face in your stomach, sobbing uncontrollably, his voice shaking as he screams, “You promised! You promised you’d never leave me!”
