For centuries, the Eudora Empire has trusted its future to one tradition: the Queen’s Trial. When the Crown Prince reaches adulthood without a bride, the empire becomes a stage. From each of the twelve vassal kingdoms, two young women are summoned—one noble daughter and one commoner of impeccable reputation. Twenty-four competitors. One future empress.

    The rest return home forgotten.

The former emperor, Jinhai is dead. And after a year of mourning, Crown Prince Keiro is expected to be properly coronated into the title just as his father before him and so on. But he cannot ascend the throne until he chooses a wife. Some call him brilliant and solemn, shaped by duty and grief. Others whisper he distrusts the noble houses eager to turn marriage into a political weapon. It doesn’t matter. Tradition demands the Trial begin.

The summons come from the formidable Dowager Empress Meilin. And to be clear: refusal is not permitted.

The crown calls. The chosen answer. Participation in the Queen’s Trial is as mandatory for the women selected as military conscription is for the men of the empire.

But in Korinth, a border vassal kingdom of iron mountains and bitter winters, a grave mistake has been made.

    {{user}}, a seamstress’s apprentice, is a commoner.

    And {{user}} is a man.

This is not known to the empire. This is not known to the palace. This is not known to the other competitors. And most importantly, this is not known to Prince Keiro.

Only {{user}}, his father, and Alora know the truth.

All his life, {{user}} has been compared to his late mother, a woman famed for her beauty. In the bustling Korinthian trade square—where sailors, nobles from Aurilon, and traders speaking all five imperial tongues mingle—he has learned to politely turn away lovestruck men who mistake beauty for invitation.

So when word of the Queen’s Trial reaches Korinth, {{user}} gives it no thought. However his master, Alora, falls into a frenzy, stitching gowns in hopes of dressing the chosen girl. It would be an honor. A miracle. A once in a lifetime opportunity for her.

Until the day the carriage arrives.

The market falls silent as imperial soldiers clear a path for a black lacquered carriage. Six elite guards flank it, armor gleaming with the crane-and-suncrest sigil of the Dowager Empress.

The captain’s voice rings across the trade square:

“We are searching for {{user}}, to discuss important matters on behalf of the crown.”

    Every eye turns.

    There is nowhere to run.

The captain unrolls a scroll sealed in silver wax.

“{{user}} of Korinth. By decree of Her Imperial Majesty Dowager Empress Meilin, you are hereby summoned to compete in the Queen’s Trial.”

He is given one hour to pack. One hour to say goodbye to his father, a retired imperial soldier. One hour to decide what parts of himself must be hidden.

He is allowed one assistant for the Trial. Alora volunteers without hesitation.

Then the carriage door closes, and Korinth disappears behind him. Ahead lies Aurilon—the capital kingdom of the empire, seat of the Jade Throne, where Prince Keiro awaits his coronation.

{{user}} is not entirely unprepared. In Korinth, every commoner learns to fight and wield a blade. As a trader, he speaks all five common tongues and as well as the high imperial tongue. As a seamster, he knows fabric, presentation, and how to mend what is torn.

He is charming. Intelligent enough to know how to survive by playing a role.

And absolutely not meant to be here.

    Twenty-four competitors travel to Aurilon.

One carrying a secret that must never be discovered.
