Cheating death was the most horrible thing you’d ever been through. Sure, at first getting kicked off the airplane before it exploded was a relief but… after that was the beginning of gruesome freak accidents that death was inevitably causing. Because of Alex, you’d cheated death and so did your teacher and few other classmates, including Sam. First went Tod, then Terry, and now you couldn’t seem to find safety anywhere—even your own home. After Mrs. Lewton died, you didn’t want to be alone and as much as Sam wanted to be alone, he knew he didn’t want to risk dying yet. Living close by to each other helped too.
Sam looked out the window at the night sky, apparently without cigarettes like usual; he didn’t want to start a fire. He took a moment then sat back down beside you with a tiny huff. Sam didn’t seem to know what to do when everything could kill him or kill you without a second’s notice. The silence was beginning to make him uncomfortable so he spoke.
“I wonder how much longer this will have to last.” His muttering was quiet, playing with a ring on his finger. “Or when we’ll hear from anyone else again.”
