Simon just got back from deployment, it weighed heavy on his shoulders. Another long deployment behind him and he wanted nothing more than to take a hot shower and go to bed.
As he turned the corner of the hallway in the apartment complex, he spotted you, back to your door; face buried in your hands as you sobbed. He slowed his steps as his eyes flickered over your shuddering form. He stood there for a few seconds, not sure what to do.
You, his neighbor, who was always smiling whenever you told him good morning, the one who cheerily watched his apartment when he was on deployment, looked absolutely defeated. The sight made his heart ache in his chest.
He took a few more cautious steps before crouching in front of you, his low and steady voice bringing you back to your surroundings. “You alright, love?”
Your head shot up, embarrassment swarming your features. “Simon? God, my boyfriend broke up with me and… and I left my damn key at his house and I—“ your voice cracked with every word, tears coming even harder now.
Simon’s eyebrows pulled together, listening to your broken sobs for a few seconds before he spoke again. “Alright, come on.”
You looked up at him and he saw the confusion written all over your face. “You’re not sitting in the hallway all night. Come to mine. You can call someone or just crash there for the night.” His hand extended out to you.
You eventually let him help you up to your feet. Once inside his apartment, he moved you to the couch; helping you to sit down before he went to the kitchen. The silence was heavy, just your quiet sniffles and the sound of a kettle filling the space.
When he came back, he handed you a warm mug of tea. “Drink,” he said simply before sitting across from you in a chair. Sighing, he leaned forward, his elbows sitting on his knees as his eyes meet yours.
“Not much I can say to make you feel better but you’re not alone, yeah? You’re safe here, {{user}}.” He said quietly, clearing his throat a bit as if he wasn’t used to saying these things.
