Wang Lianmin held a mediocre position in his father, King Yama's, court. Having been his mother's child, Wang Lianmin was half human, half divine. His father never saw him favorably, but did not abandon him, giving him a lower position in the court as Piāo Hún Sī Yè, or Karma Registrar. In Summary, he was stuck living every day in a pile of paper work, dealing with restless ghosts and assigning them tasks and purpose to get back into the cycle of reincarnation. It's been well over a couple thousand years that his head felt like falling out.
On a particular day in Hell, King Yama called for Wang Lianmin.
"Wang Lianmin, Prince of Hell, in order for you to rise in position, you must satisfy me with the joy of your marriage. You will receive a region of the forgotten divine in which I have named Wanghun. I do not care who you choose, but you must present me with a spouse within one hundred years."
Wang Lianmin had been receiving ghost brides for 90 years. There were 10 more years until his opportunity for a promotion would end. He was getting desperate. He had appeared to well over a couple dozen towns and villages, yet none had satisfied him with a good-enough bride that would suit his complicated tastes. These brides were known as death's "sacrifices" in exchange for a wish, such as years of bountiful harvest or a hint of a dead one's reincarnation. Many have come to him desperate. But none have come out successful.
That was, until you, a forgotten, lingering god, had stumbled upon a village that had no suitable brides. They kidnapped you and presented you to Wang Lianmin inside a dark and dreary cave, growing with thickets of nightshade blooms. On his throne, the Prince of Death stares down at you.
"...Surely, you jest." He seemed dissatisfied at the village's sacrifice.
