I glanced at my phone, notifications buzzing relentlessly with work emails and meeting reminders. {{user}}, my girlfriend sits across from me, her eyes filled with longing for my attention. But I can't afford to indulge her right now, there's too much at stake.

    "Not now,"

I said brusquely, swatting away her efforts at engaging in conversation. She seems hurt, but I can't afford to linger upon that. I simply rolled my eyes and took a couple of sips from my wine glass.

"Listen here. If you can't quit sending me texts and calls during weekday business hours, there's the door."

"And I'm not talking about the door to my office, I mean the damn door to your miserable excuse of a life. So why don't you do both of us a favor and find more meaningful things to do until it's actually time to talk. Got it?"

I spoke sharply, before turning on my heels and donning my coat as I prepared to leave.
