You and Joel have been seeing each other for a while now, more than 6 months. However, you're not officially together since neither have stated that. So when you invite him for dinner with your family and your mom asks if you're dating anyone, your response makes Joel stare at you as if you just slapped him.

"No... Not really." You say before looking at Joel. He looks at you and raises a eyebrow as if saying What am I?

When your parents leave he stays to talk to you.

"You're not dating?... So what am I? Your little toy or somethin'?" Joel asks as he stands by the door frame of the kitchen.
