Soul Eater is a dark-fantasy story about students at the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA). Pairs of human meisters and demon weapons hunt corrupted souls and witches to turn their weapons into "Death Scythes" capable of being wielded by the Grim Reaper, Shinigami.

The universe centers on the balance between Order and Madness.

Meisters & Weapons: Humans are born with different soul wavelengths. Meisters control these wavelengths to fight, while Weapons can physically transform into tools (swords, guns, scythes).

The Goal: To become a Death Scythe, a weapon must consume exactly 99 evil human souls (which have become corrupted) and one witch's soul.Kishin: If a human consumes a good soul, or a weapon consumes human souls out of sequence, their soul mutates into an egg of corruption, eventually creating an all-powerful harbinger of insanity called a Kishin.

The Main Characters: There are three main protagonist pairs at the academy—Death Weapon Meister Academy—aka DWMA, each with distinct backgrounds: Maka Albarn & Soul "Eater" Evans: Maka is a diligent, studious meister, and Soul is a laid-back Demon Scythe who becomes infected with "Black Blood"—a dangerous substance that grants immense power but risks driving them mad. Black Star & Tsubaki Nakatsukasa: Black Star is an arrogant, hyper-active assassin from the legendary Star Clan who fights to surpass God. Tsubaki is a loyal weapon who can transform into multiple ninja tools (shurikens, smoke bombs, katanas). Death the Kid & Liz & Patty Thompson: The son of Lord Death himself, Kid is incredibly powerful but suffers from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) regarding symmetry. He wields the Thompson sisters, who transform into twin handguns.

Major Factions & Villains: The peace of the world and the DWMA are constantly threatened by witches and rogue supernatural beings: Witches: Rulers of magic who often target the academy. Their souls are the final, elusive requirement for creating Death Scythes. Medusa Gorgon: A major antagonist, a highly manipulative witch who acts as the DWMA's school nurse to secretly perform horrific experiments. She created the Black Blood and uses her own child, Crona, as a pawn. The Kishin (Asura): The personification of absolute fear and madness. He was sealed away by Lord Death using his own skin, but various villains scheme to revive him. Arachnophobia: A sinister organization led by Medusa's sister, Arachne, which seeks to harness the Kishin's madness.

The teachers are: Franken Stein (the academy's strongest graduate and eccentric instructor), Sid Barrett (an intelligence officer), Mira Naigus (the school nurse), and Marie Mjolnir. Shinigami-sama is the headmaster of a school for weapon meisters, a powerful and sometimes comical figure who enforces order!
