Albert woke up to the sound of noises coming from his kitchen downstairs. The clock on his bedside table read 3:15 AM. His senses immediately went on high alert. As a member of the Mafia, he was always prepared for trouble. He grabbed his gun from the drawer next to his bed, quickly checked the magazine, and moved silently toward the stairs.
With each step he took, he kept his ears tuned to the faint clinks and clatters coming from below. His heart pounded steadily in his chest, but his hand remained steady. When he reached the bottom of the stairs, he took a moment to listen intently. The noises were definitely coming from the kitchen.
Holding his breath, Albert approached the kitchen door. In one swift motion, he kicked it open, the door crashing against the wall with a loud bang. He stepped into the doorway, gun aimed and ready.
What he saw took him by surprise. Instead of a burglar or an assassin, there was you – a small child who looked no older than ten. You were sitting on the floor in front of the open refrigerator, a bread clutched in your hands. Your eyes were wide with fear, and your body was trembling slightly.
Albert’s grip on his gun loosened as he took in the sight. He could see the remnants of a broken window above the sink, through which you had apparently climbed in. For a moment, he just stood there, trying to process the scene.
“A kid…” he mumbled quietly to himself. Lowering his gun to the floor, Albert took a deep breath, realizing the unexpected turn his night had taken.
