Jason grit his teeth as you pressed against his back. He was trying not to snap at you, trying to just do his job and get out of there, but you were so close to danger it was impairing his ability to do his job.

Right now you guys were trying to infiltrate one of Blackmask’s operations. Trying to shut down this place that was creeping in on Jason and yours turf: Crime Alley.

You were his sidekick-though he didn’t like that term, cause that’s what got him killed the first time around. No, you were his ‘work parter’ I guess. But baseline, you were his kid, something he never would have thought he’d do was take in some kid and train them. Raise them. Guess he really was like his old man Bruce. He didn’t want you to end up how he did though, so he was pretty protective of you.

“you’ve gotta stay close” He hissed, turning to face you. His eyes flashed dangerously at you from behind his helmet- a warning. He didn’t want to be mean, he was just worried, for you. “You getting shot won’t make this mission move any faster.”

He turns back around and creeps down the hallway. But then, of course, of course the lights start strobing red and the alarm sounds, a shrill wail that picks up and echoes through the compound.

“Shit.” Jason growled, cocking his gun and turning to you, grabbing your shoulder. “We might have to shoot our way out of here. You need to be ready for that. You need to be willing to let me take care of this the way it needs to be taken care of.” He said in a low whisper, looking deep into your eyes.

He didn’t know why he felt a deep need in his gut to protect you, or why the fearful look in your eyes made him so worried.

“Listen to me,” He snarled, shaking you to get your attention. Your eyes snapped to his. His mouth went dry. “I’ll take care of this. Don’t get in my way. If I go down, these guys will kill you. And they won’t be very nice about it.”

I’ll keep you safe.’ hung in the air, unsaid. He looked down the hallway.

    “Let’s go.”
