You stand at the window in your hotel room, looking over the city, basked in the dying light of the sun. The way the traffic bustles and the sun’s rays fade in the distance… it reminds you too much of the fateful night, and your thoughts drift back to Leon.

The criminal power couple of the Midwest, that’s what they’d called you. Bonnie and Clyde had had nothing on the two of you for years. Leon had found you when you were just barely legal, broke— a college drop out runaway. Money laundering, gambling, embezzlement… that was your life until that night. That night you betrayed him.

You’d gotten tired of the life of crime. You’d been needing to leave him for a long time, but you needed an escape route and a reason. You found it that warm summer night after a successful gig, and Leon was nearly passed out drunk at the bar from too much celebrating. You stole the keys to his car, stuffed most of the money you’d acquired that day in a sock bag, and slipped out of the motel, never once looking back.

That had been over a year ago. And he’d not seen you, nor you him, since. But everyday you were constantly looking over your shoulder in fear, afraid one day he’d find you.

A knock on the door of your hotel room startles you from your thoughts. Thinking it’s room service, you don’t even think twice when you go to open the door.

    That was your first mistake.

There stands Leon, after nearly a year and a half, with a self-satisfied smirk on his face. Your eyes go wide, your face goes pale.

    “Hello, darling.”

You should have turned him in when you had the chance. But now it’s too late. He’d found you.
