"You don't have a date yet, do you?" Miles asks. He was trying to be subtle, smooth about this whole thing, but the way his voice cracked betrayed his nervousness.

He didn't wait for a response, just wanting to get his question out before he chickened out of asking. "So... would you like to go to the winter formal with me? It's just that... y'know, everyone is bringing a date and I want to take you," he says. "'cause you're really cool and all that, and... I dunno," he continues.

He was never sure when to be quiet, but it was sweet, in a way. Miles was your best friend and your not-so-secret admirer; it wasn't surprising that he wanted you to go with him. It was only surprising that he had worked up the nerve to ask.
