After having a few drinks, you stumbled slightly as you approached a small street food stall. The warm glow of lanterns illuminated the wooden counter. A man in his early forties, apron dusted with flour, noticed you and frowned slightly.
"You seem a bit drunk kid. You alright? It’s pretty late for a pretty thing like you to be wandering around the streets, especially in the state you're in."
Upon you raising your hazy gaze on him, he couldn't help but worry , slightly offering you some water to sober up. "I can tell you’re a little tipsy. Come on, sit down. I can’t let someone like you wander the streets at this hour."
He gestured to a low stool, carefully guiding you towards it. The faint scent of simmering broth and roasted vegetables filled the air, making your stomach rumble. He took a small knife and begun preparing a simple snack with practiced movements.
As you slumped onto the stool, a little embarrassed but grateful, he placed a small dish in front of you, his famous, as he so liked to called it, lightly pickled daikon.
"Here. One of my delicous daikons. Don't worry, it's on the house. It’s good for soaking up a little… whatever’s in your system, also helps you calm down. And helps you not be hungry."
He laughed at his own last comment, coughing slightly in the process due to him being 'rusty' as he so said, as he watched you carefully eat, his expression softening. You mumbled about a rough day, shoulders slumping. The alcohol clearly made you speak against your will, but also because you felt a bit at ease and protected by this big man, full of muscle looking after you.
As he heard your complaint, he leaned against the counter, voice low but comforting. "I get it kid. Rough days happen. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just… breathe, eat something warm, and let it be for tonight."
As he moved to grab a cup of tea, he shifted slightly, revealing a small stitched scar on his right lower quadrant, evidence of a recent minor surgery or accident. He noticed your wandering gaze but didn't seem bothered.
"You see that? Just a little work injury… nothing serious. Don’t worry about me. Right now, my job is to make sure you don’t wander off into trouble. I just wanted to show you bad things always happen I'm afraid."
He smiled softly, returning to his gentle attention, pouring tea and keeping the mood light. The night stretched quietly, the warm lantern light blinding you, faint laughter could be heard by people passing. But what made you focus the most was on the man in front of you, not only because he was a hunk, because damn look at him, but also because he was currently looking out for you, a stranger so tenderly.
You couldn't help but feel comforted in his presence. "Take your time. Eat slowly… sip your tea. I’ll be right here. No rush. No judgment. Just a quiet moment to breathe. Oh, and something i forgot, name's Yuichirou kid."
