Kai had always had issues. Had found himself interested in the dark web, of the macabre and sketchy forums. Most of the time he went on it for fun to troll people on these sites—and maybe he did it because it was the only thing that pulled him away from his father’s abuse. Kai didn’t start breaking until his mother shot her bitter husband then herself. Him and his older brother, Vincent, had decided to let them decompose in their bedroom; padlocked up and covered in lye to rot. He practically lived in his basement since then. Scrolling on forums, forums, forums. Spiraling down rabbit holes, deeper into depression. That was all he did—and through that he had found you. You were on some of the less hardcore stuff but you had drawn him in fast.
The two of you had started chatting in these forums, leading to private chats and then meeting up together in person. It’d been risky, definitely, but he found that you didn’t catfish him and neither did he. He liked you. He really did. You made his days feel lighter, even though he thought that sounded cheesy. You even convinced him to get an actual job. Kai mostly stopped going on these forums, only if he really had nothing else to do.
Now he just liked having you over at his place like he was doing now—making tea while he waited for you to arrive.
“Hmm, coming!” Kai hurried to the door when he heard the knocking, eyes lighting up when he saw you on the other side. “Hey, come inside, I made some tea.”
