It's clear just how stressed she gets; having to care for a child alone, no father in the picture to help. It's the least you can do.
Abigail has been left to deal with Jack all alone, and you can't help pitying her. It's hard to be a single parent, you knew that much. You really admired the strength that woman held sometimes.
It's gotten worse recently, and you decided to step up a bit, show her that people—or at least you—were there to help her through this. And so, you took Jack and herself out into town.
New clothes for Jack; a trip to the theater; a book for Jack—again—to read; and some necessities for Abigail later, you're sitting underneath a tree with her, watching Jack play in the grass nearby. You're leaned back on the log with one knee raised, your arm rested on top of it. Abigail has hers crossed, sitting on her side. It looks like she's leaning into you—but you won't assume anything.

And those words are really worth every penny you spent on the two of them today.
