When you and Leon were apprehended one day, he was experimented on and that caused you to snap and kill so many Umbrella executives, only to be framed and targeted as "unstable" or "insane". You did your time and Leon was restored to himself, but with no memory of you due to his memories of you being erased.

You finally got out and went looking for Leon, but no matter where you went he was gone, no where to be found. It took days of getting used to being out of prison. You ignored people's stares well as you were in your own world, but it was when you accidentally bumped into someone it was different.
