The dry land stretches as far as the eye can see.
The wind blows low, stirring up dust and carrying with it the scent of something ancient—memories that never healed. Kali is there, wearing Jane's clothes, as if she were wearing not just fabric, but identity, history, choice.
She smiles slightly.
It's not mockery. It's acceptance.
Jane walks beside her, focused, her fists clenched. Ahead of them, the world begins to unravel, like paint running down a wet canvas.
They are no longer in Hawkins Laboratory, in the Upside Down. — Kali hitched a ride in her sister's mind — And together, with Max's help to guide them through Henry's diseased mind, they would find the children her brother had captured, and use them to bring the Abyss into our world.*
They are inside Henry's mind.
THE MIND OF 001
The sky tears open in shades of red and gray. Impossible structures rise, echoes of ancient memories, broken clocks, and pulsating roots. The air vibrates with a constant hum, as if thought itself were screaming.
They don't have much time. From the real world, Hopper gives the signal. Three knocks — The Abyss is moving.
Max: — "Hurry, this way." —
The three take a shortcut through the memories, managing to reach where Henry is. — Along with the twelve children, in a trance, a kind of ritual to move worlds.*
Eleven, without wasting much time, pulls Henry from the chair with her telekinesis and throws him out the window.
When he returned, Max had already fled with the children to a safe place. Or so he thought.
Henry: — "Where are they?" —
His voice echoes in layers, overlapping, as if several versions were speaking at the same time.
Jane steps forward.
Eleven: — "With Max, far away from here." —
Henry pulls her with his powers, suspending her in the air. His human hand distorts, and with his claws, he forcibly accesses her memories. And there, he sees someone he didn't expect to be there — 008.
He drops Eleven to the ground and walks towards the table. As he crosses to the other side of the illusion, he becomes irritated — There's nothing there.
Jane recovers, she reaches out and with a telekinetic impulse, she throws Henry onto the table. Kali springs into action.
Kali: — "Hello, Brother." —
Kali walks among the illusions like an architect of chaos.
She creates doors that should never exist, mirrors that reflect younger versions of Henry, children crying, muffled screams, the floor of the Creel house stained with blood.
Kali (whispering): — “You taught us pain was power.” —
The illusions intensify. A girl who had been very close to him. A kiss, bones breaking—Patty Newby. Henry recoils.
There, he's just a boy trapped by his traumas.
MAX AND THE CHILDREN
In another layer of the mind, Max runs, guiding the other children through the narrow tunnel of memory. She knows this place. She's been here before.
Max: — “Don’t stop. No matter what you hear.” —
The walls seem to close in. Whispers call to them. But Max keeps going, leading them deeper, straight to the core of Henry's fear—the point he never dared to face.
011 VS 001
Jane screams. Not from pain—from exertion.
Blood slowly trickles from her nose, but she doesn't flinch.
Henry lunges forward, trying to crush her with sheer psychic force.
Henry: — “You were always the strongest… and still you choose them.” —
Jane stares at him.
Jane: — “That’s why I win.” —
She pushes. With everything she has.
While Henry fights against Kali's illusions, against the cave, against the memories he buried, Jane uses the moment of weakness.
The impact is devastating. The world trembles.
Kali opens her eyes. She sees Jane resisting. She sees Henry failing. And, for an instant, her smile disappears.
She touches her own chest. As if counting the time.
Kali (thought): — "This is where the cycle breaks." —
She says nothing.
She creates only one last illusion—something that even Jane doesn't fully perceive. Something that will be important later.
