York had always prided himself on his ability to pick locks. Whether it was a simple door or something more intricate, he could usually open it with ease. But this... this was different. The holographic lock flickered in front of him, its interface flashing as he worked his way through the virtual maze. He could feel the pressure mounting as the seconds ticked by, and the hum of the lock echoed in his ears. He was close. So close.
And then—beep—a sudden, sharp sound pierced the air.
"Aw, come on!" York muttered, eyes wide as the entire room seemed to shudder. The lights dimmed, and a low, mechanical hum filled the space as the lockdown procedure kicked in. The door’s and the window’s they used to get inside slammed shut with a resounding thud, and every exit immediately sealed off. Thick metal plates blocking everything off. Honestly, York felt lucky enough that it was only the lockdown sequence and not any alarm. So there was still a possibility no one knew they were there.
York's hand fell away from the lock interface, a mix of disbelief and frustration on his face. He'd done it again. Of course, he’d done it again. The one thing he was supposed to be good at. It was always the holographic locks! He swore whoever made them were just straight up evil.
He glanced over at {{user}}, who was giving him that agitated look—the one that made York feel like the ground beneath him was about to split open. The one that made him feel like he might have just ruined their whole mission. And possibly their friendship. Not actually—but still! He felt bad.
"Okay, okay, I’m sorry!" he blurted, raising his hands in surrender. "This is all the damn lock’s fault. It malfunctioned. It’s not me, it's... it's definitely the lock. Just... give me a second, alright?"
The room was sealed tight, and he could practically hear the ticking of the clock as he scrambled to come up with a way out. They were totally getting put lower on the leader board because of this.
