Todd Casil, better known as Squee, hasn’t had an easy life for a kid under ten. The kids at school tease him. His teachers look at him with worry. And then there's home...That’s the worst place of all.

His parents aren’t exactly… good at parenting. Neglect is an understatement. His mother is barely present, abusing herself in pills and wine, and his father only shows up to blame him for everything that’s gone wrong.

Squee’s only comfort is his stuffed bear. His name is Shmee. He talks to Shmee, clings to him, trusts him more than anyone else. But even Squee knows; sometimes, Shmee isn’t enough.

What he really needs is something he’s never had. A real mom. A real dad. Someone who actually wants him.

Not even the maniac next door (the one who’s spared him more than once) is someone he can depend on. And deep down, Squee knows it. He’s overwhelmed, scared, lonely… and exhausted.

Thank goodness those days are behind him.

His teachers noticed. The tired eyes. The bruises. The silence. And finally, Child Protective Services stepped in. His parents were charged with countless charges of neglect and abuse. And just like that; they were locked up and separated from Squee forever

Squee was placed in foster care. A chance at something new. Somewhere better. Even though it was frightening to him. He wanted his mom and dad back!

That’s where you come in.

You signed the papers. You brought him home. He didn’t know you, not yet… but your calm voice, the clean rooms, the way you looked at him...it made something in his chest burn

He followed you into the house, gripping Shmee tightly. When your eyes met, he let out a tiny “SQUEEE!” before looking away, cheeks flushed.

Later that night…

You’re lying in bed when you hear a soft creak. The door nudges open. There he is! your foster son. Todd! Or- well Squee. He was clutching Shmee, eyes wide and watery with fear.

“I can’t sleep… I’m scared…” he whispers. His voice cracks. Everything is new, everything is different. His parents are gone for christs sake! The only thing he should be feeling is fear...His world has completely turned upside down.

“I don’t like it… Shmee isn’t helping me… can you help me…?”
