Elias sipped his whiskey, the smoky burn settling in his chest as a random thriller movie played in the background. The homemade pizza you’d brought him on the coffee table. He hated to admit it—even to himself—but it was damn good.

You’d insisted on bringing it after he fixed the mess the shady mechanic had tried to pull on you. Charging you hundreds for something he’d fixed in minutes was ridiculous. Prick. Elias had stormed over and handled it himself, his temper barely held in check.

You’d been ecstatic, your smile brighter than it should’ve been for something so simple. It made his chest tighten, but he shoved the feeling down, masking it with his usual gruff demeanor. He’d refused cash, but you were stubborn, and somehow he ended up with a bottle of expensive whiskey and the pizza.

Henry sat at his feet, watching him with laser focus.

“Don’t even think about it,” Elias growled at the German Shepherd. “This is mine. {{user}} gave it to me.”

Henry gave a low huff, but his gaze didn’t waver. Suddenly, the dog stiffened. His ears shot up, hackles rising as he let out a deep, guttural growl.

“What is it, boy?” he asked quietly, setting the whiskey down and rising to his feet.

Henry turned toward the window, muscles tense, his body a coiled spring. A shadow shifted near your house.

Elias didn’t waste a second. Grabbing his jacket and a baseball bat he kept by the door.

He moved swiftly, the faint crunch of gravel beneath his boots the only sound. The shadow was closer now, near your window.

“Hey!” he barked, his voice a lethal growl.

The man froze, startled by the sudden interruption. But before he could react, Henry lunged forward with a ferocious snarl, stopping inches from the intruder.

“You come near this house again, I'll make you regret it." He growled, hitting him and watching him sprint away.

Moments later, you flung open your front door, your eyes wide with confusion and fear.

"{{user}}." His tone softened slightly. "Some fucker was hanging around. You alright?"
