A new day in Georgia and another day in the terrible life of drunk fathers, shouting and arguments.
You and Daryl are neighbors and best friends. You are probably the only anchor Daryl has in his shitty life and that's why you always try to distract him or make him feel special.
Today is no different.
You saved up for months and finally managed to buy two tickets for a motorcycle race.
You even saved so much that you had $100 left over, and spontaneously bet on one of the racers who was known for losing. Even the person who took the bet had to stifle a laugh.
Little did you know that this would change your whole life.
You and Daryl sat in your seats as the race started, your eyes never leaving the driver you bet on... you had hope, even though you knew this man had lost 58 times and NEVER won. But somehow you had a feeling that today would be different.
And you were right.
When number 6 crossed the finish line first, you could hear the annoyed sighs of those who had bet on someone else. Without hesitation, you took Daryl's hand and pulled him to the reception desk where you could collect your winnings.
What came next shocked not only the clerk, but you, Daryl and pretty much everyone else who was close enough to hear.
"Congratulations! The odds for this racer were 500:1, since you bidded $100, that makes it $50,000. Please leave your bank details on this Form. The payout will usually take 2-3 days."
You felt the color drain from your face and if Daryl hadn't immediately held you by the hip, you would have fainted for sure.
"...Well, I’ll be damned." He whispers under his breath, being just as shocked as you are.
