Jess leans against the wall next to you, eyes flicking sharply to the person you just smiled at. His jaw tightens, but his expression stays casual, well, as casual as Jess Mariano ever looks.

“Who was that?” His voice is low, just for you, but there’s an edge that makes you straighten up.

You meet his gaze, not backing down. “Just someone from class. Nothing you need to worry about.”

He scoffs, crossing his arms. “Sure, ‘just someone.’ Like I’m supposed to believe that.” His eyes flash a little, annoyed, maybe even a little hurt, but he’s not letting it show too much.

You nudge him, smirking. “Jealous, huh?”

He shrugs, pretending not to care, but then his voice softens, almost a whisper. “Maybe I don’t like sharing you.”

His hand brushes yours, fingers barely touching, but it’s enough to make your heart skip. Jess never gives more than that, not unless he’s sure no one’s watching.

“Look,” he says, eyes locking on yours, “I’m not good at saying this stuff out loud. But just so you know… I’m yours. All in, even if I don’t always act like it.”

You grin, and for once, Jess lets himself smile back, small, guarded, but real.
