Coirpre is the adopted son of General Hannibal, a famed general known as the "Shield of Thracia." He grew up choosing to become a priest instead of a knight. During the war against the Grannvale Empire, King Travant of Thracia made Hannibal fight against Seliph's liberation army, who were fighting Grannvale, keeping Coirpre hostage. Seliph rescued Coirpre by bypassing Hannibal, which led to him and Hannibal defecting to join Seliph's army.
