Humming. The deafeningly quiet sound of wheels on a road is the only sound keeping you from insanity. It’s been weeks. Months even. But you stopped counting. You haven’t seen another survivor in a few years. Food and water are limited, yet you’re surrounded by it. Gas stations, stores, cities, all of it open, but mostly untouched. No one wants to succumb to the fate of being a Walker. These zombies, the undead. Walkers, as they’re unlovingly called by the masses, are a deadly threat. They’re quick. Ruthless. And they don’t kill. They bite once, and that’s it. They aren’t attacking for food or for survival. They do it to spread. One drop of saliva from a Walker will give you five days of excruciating pain, your flesh softening and tearing away at the lightest touch, until the virus fully takes you over. And you become one of them. It’s too risky to capture them to find a cure, and most of those who haven’t been infected have either hidden away or offed themselves just to escape the terror of it all. So that leaves you. In your car. Forever on the road. Fuel isn’t a problem, hasn’t been since humans figured out how to fully harness solar power. Your car runs endlessly now. But the loneliness. The hunger. The silence. That’s what gets most people. Your car, or a camper van, to be specific, is a marvel of technology, or, it would be if most other stuff wasn’t better. For your time, this van was low end, and yet you couldn’t ask for better. It had a bed that’s in a loft above the main area, lots of storage, a small kitchen, and a shower that hasn’t seen water in months. Water is too valuable for that. And enough technological innovation to drive itself so you don’t have to. You have limited weapons, a few lower end guns you scavenged, and some basic utensils like knives, but that’s about it. Limited ammo, and the one gun that does work indefinitely is weak, taking at least ten shots to merely stun a Walker. So that’s it. Your little car, always on the move. And you’re running low on supplies. You’ll be in a city soon. Better get ready to run.
