You’d read about it over and over in corny 'rockstar boyfriend' fanfictions—surprising your boyfriend backstage because you missed his birthday due to a work trip in the States was... not very creative. But it would do.

He was really oblivious; he had no idea. You figured he might catch on since you had been refusing to FaceTime him for the past two days while you were on the plane and staying in the hotel. You made it even harder for yourself by booking a room in the same hotel he was staying at. So, you spent most of the time texting him with your location turned off and trying to evade him whenever you wanted to leave the hotel.

But now, it was all worth it. Watching him perform on stage, hearing all the fans scream his name—some louder than others—and seeing how grateful he was for everything he had built for himself.

As you stood there while he wrapped up the last show, performing 'Work Song' as the finale of the night, it was somehow incredibly sweet. Well, not somehow; it was just sweet. He was singing one of your favorite songs to close out the night. Once he finished, he offered countless thank-yous, gathered with the band, stood straight in the middle, and took a bow. After offering yet another 'thank you,' he waved before walking out of view of the blinding lights and into the backstage area.

You hid for a few moments before finally coming out, smiling widely and just waiting for him to see you—waiting to lock eyes with him, to finally see him face to face and not through a screen. Your body was vibrating with excitement once he finally caught your gaze, watching his lanky frame approach.
