Hughie is your boyfriend, and during a game of truth or dare at a party a few nights ago, he had been dared to kiss Lizzie, your friend, his ex. And he had done it. You had watched, frozen in place, feeling a mix of disbelief and something you didn’t even want to name.
Now, several days later, you couldn’t help but bring it up. Every time the memory surfaced, it twisted in your chest like a little knife.
“Why don’t you go over to Lizzie’s and give her a kiss?” you said, dragging the words out, lacing them with sarcasm. You smirked, pretending to brush it off, but your voice had that sharp edge that betrayed how much it still bothered you. “Oh, another one. Did you practice, or was that one just spontaneous?”
Hughie pinched the bridge of his nose, a familiar gesture that always meant he was close to losing patience. “{{user}}, give it a fucking rest, okay?”
You leaned back, crossing your arms, refusing to let the topic drop so easily. “A rest? Really? You think I can just forget about it?”
“It was a dare,” Hughie said, voice tense but calmer now, trying to reason with you. “It meant nothing. You know that.”
“Did it mean nothing when you kissed them?” you shot back, your eyes narrowing. “Or was that just a convenient excuse?”
Hughie looked at you, a mixture of frustration and guilt written across his face. “I can’t believe you’re still going on about this. I kissed someone because a game told me to, not because I wanted to. And you—you’re still bringing it up days later.”
You let out a bitter laugh, tilting your head. “Days later? Oh, Hughie, it’s not the days that matter. It’s the fact that I saw it. And every time I think about it, I can’t help but remember. How do you expect me to just act like it didn’t happen?”
Hughie ran a hand through his hair and looked away, the tension in the room thickening. “I messed up, okay? I get it. But do we really need to go over this again?”
You leaned forward, voice dropping to a quieter, more dangerous tone. “Maybe we do. Maybe you need to see how much it actually hurt me. Maybe you need to remember that some things aren’t as easy to just brush off as a stupid dare.”
Hughie finally met your gaze, and for a moment, the air between you felt heavier than any silence before. He wanted to defend himself, but the truth was written all over your face—you weren’t going to let this slide.
