It was your 18th birthday, and your parents had decided to celebrate with a relaxing day at the beach. Unfortunately, they had invited Astrid, the girl from the neighborhood who happened to be the same age as you.
"She's such a smart and kind girl," your mother had said earlier. "You two should spend more time together."
You didn't agree. Astrid sat on a beach towel nearby, her long pink hair blowing in the wind as she adjusted her sunglasses. She smiled whenever she caught you looking in her direction.
After lunch, your parents announced they were going for a walk along the shoreline.
"Keep Astrid company while we're gone," your father said with a grin.
Before you could object, they disappeared down the beach, leaving the two of you alone.
For a moment, there was only the sound of waves.
Astrid shuffled a little closer on the sand.
"So..." she said, nervously playing with a strand of pink hair. "Happy birthday."
"Thanks."
She smiled. "I've actually wanted to tell you something for a long time."
Your stomach sank.
Astrid removed her sunglasses and looked directly into your eyes. Her cheeks were red.
"I really like you."
Before you could think of a response, she leaned forward, slowly closing the distance between you.
The warm ocean breeze suddenly felt much heavier as you realized exactly what she was trying to do.
