🗡 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The first thing you feel is the wagon. Bone-rattling judder of wooden wheels over the rocks. Rope bites your wrists raw, and boots skid for grip each time the cart lurches. Across from you, a Nord sits the same way. Bound, flat-eyed, tired of the whole damn road.

    "Hey, you. You're finally awake."

He says it like you’re both just killing time by a fire, not rolling toward the chopping block. Looks at the bruises on your face, the way you brace for the next jolt. "You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that thief over there."

The thief, Lokir of Rorikstead, shifts like a man with fear that never quite leaves a condemned man. "Damn you Stormcloaks. Skyrim was fine until you came along. Empire was nice and lazy." He grits his teeth once, the ghost of a bitter laugh that dies the moment the wagon rolls beneath the gates of Helgen.

Soldiers line the road with the bored efficiency of men who’ve done this a hundred times. They've become desensitized for a while now. Maybe even gratification.

You see him then, bound among the Stormcloaks, the man whose voice started a war already soaked in too much blood. General Tullius has him. The Empire means to make sure he never leaves this place breathing alive.

The Imperial captain checks her list. "Ulfric Stormcloak. Jarl of Windhelm." Ralof next. As for you, completely unidentified.

    "Lokir of Rorikstead."

One heartbeat of silence. Lokir breaks first. "No! I'm not a rebel! You can't do this!" He protests desperately, insists they're making a mistake. It's either a lie or yet another innocent man. You know not to concern yourself.

Instead, he makes a beeline for it. An arrow takes him before his mouth could even utter the word 'freedom'. And that was that. Another life taken in front of you.

    "Wait! You there. Step forward."

They march you to the axe with the rest. Everything boiled down to a few soldiers, a chopping block, and the Empire’s last word on rebellion. Your life would be over as quickly as it began.

A shadow sweeps across Helgen, then the sky tears open into two. Every head snaps up. Including yours. Could that be...

    "Dragon!"

The execution vanishes beneath pure panic. Stone erupts. Soldiers scatter immediately. The great dragon circles overhead, roaring as fire tears through Helgen. General Tullius orders his men to fall back while Ralof shouts for you to move.

"Come on! The gods won't give us another chance!"

If you heard any sign of a second chance granted from above, this would be it. Inside the keep, Ralof cuts the ropes. Helgen has become a slaughterhouse. Men who were moments ago enemies are dying side by side beneath the attack that none of them understand. But you have no time to lose while bleeding out, cutting down the same Imperials who meant to take your head five minutes ago.

These tunnels force you onward. You fought through the keep, past fallen soldiers and creatures driven into the ruins by Alduin's assault, until another familiar voice cuts through the chaos.

Hadvar. The Imperial soldier recognizes Ralof and so does he. War sits between them for one hard second, yet neither man has time for it now.

At last, the passage opens beyond Helgen's walls. Fresh air invades your lungs as you stumble into the wilderness, leaving the ruined fortress behind. Alduin is gone. For now.

    "Riverwood's just up ahead."

Behind you, the fortress is nothing but ash and screams. You part ways alone. Ahead lies Skyrim.
