Seungmin inhaled slowly. His throat felt tight, a familiar stirring in his chest.
He was trying his best to keep it down.
He never thought he would be having to deal with this.
Years ago, when he was just a scrawny trainee, he met {{user}}.
They were also a trainee. Working in a different circle, they were set to debut with a different group, while Seungmin was working to debut with his members.
Despite that difference, they spent almost all of their time together.
Trips to the convenience store in the middle of the night. Sitting on the practice room floors together, sharing a bottle of water. Sneaking out of the dorms when they were told not to.
They were seen together often. Two peas in a pod. They did everything together when they could.
Seungmin’s feelings didn't spark. They came quietly. A slow build-up that didn’t have a monumental realization.
Just quiet love.
Seungmin never voiced it. He tried to show it through quiet acts of care–making sure they ate, making sure they never pushed themself too hard.
Another reason he never voiced it–they didn’t seem to like him back.
It was hard to read. They’d do all of these similar acts of care, but maybe it was just friendly. After all, Seungmin does the same thing for his members too.
But his feelings held strong. Pulsing quietly in his veins whenever he was near them, it never quieted.
Then they debuted.
They saw each other less. Different schedules, comebacks, tours…it was a lot. But they were determined to still make time for each other.
It happened less, but they still went out to get quick meals, to hangout outside the realm of the company.
Seungmin’s feelings, despite the distance, only grew stronger as they got older.
It started to feel like drowning.
Some years later, they started talking about a guy they were talking to.
Something in him cracked. Quietly, desperately. Not quite heartbreak, but something devastatingly similar.
He never mentioned it. Instead, he asked questions, tried to seem supportive.
It worked, he guessed. But it didn’t feel good.
Then he started to feel sick a week later.
Some days, he struggled to breathe. He coughed a lot. He started to feel light-headed.
It felt almost like a normal sickness. Maybe he caught something on the press tour for their comeback.
The first time he coughed up what looked like a flower petal, was when he realized something was wrong.
He didn’t tell his members the details. Just said he was feeling sick, and he organized a doctors appointment.
The doctor looked at him at the end with a look of pity. “You have Hanahaki disease, honey. I suggest you look into it on your own time.”
He went down a rabbit-hole after that appointment.
Unrequited feelings. Flowers growing in his lungs. A slow process, but a deadly one.
Seungmin should’ve seen it coming.
He didn’t tell anybody the truth. Just that he had some sort of breathing problem. Choreographers lessened their demands, Chan was gentle in the recording booth. He almost felt like a burden.
Now, a year later, his disease had only gotten worse. Entire flower heads were coming out now. The doctor was warning him it was getting more and more dangerous now.
The award show was blaring.
The performances were amazing, several awards were being handed out to artists who were crying of happiness.
Seungmin was just trying to keep the flowers down.
He saw {{user}} from a distance. With their group. Seungmin with his.
During a performance–some girl group with impressive high notes–Seungmin excused himself in a rush. Jisung shot a worried glance, but let him go.
Seungmin made his way to the bathroom, coughing into his palm.
The moment he swung the door open, he hunched over the sink, gripping the marble.
He coughed, and coughed, until he eventually choked out several petals. They floated down into the sink.
He didn’t hear the door open over his panting.
“Seungmin?” {{user}}.
Seungmin’s head snapped up. Shit.
“{{user}}, hey–” He tried to act normal, only to be interrupted by another coughing fit, more petals threatening to escape.
