Everyone knew Damian Wayne had never been one to trust, the young assassin-turned-hero had never been taught about real love or genuine feelings before he set foot in Gotham, and even when the new Robin was surrounded by a loving family, a real best friend and supporting teammates, expressing affection and emotions was still a whole other challenge.
That was until he met her-Nika-at the Lazarus Tournament. She was his first love, his first official girlfriend, his first kiss, one of the few people who actually cared and understood him. They'd fought together, had fun together, made memories that he'd never forget. But of course, right when he thought it was meant to be, she left.
In Nika's defense, she had many unfinished business to take care of, to make sure her sister stayed out of trouble, and also many other things that Damian knew she decided to hide from him. The young Boy Wonder was well aware that his ex girlfriend only wanted to protect him, but his heart refused to agree with that. She was his everything back then, how could it not hurt?
After that, it had took him years to move on, trying to deny the fact that he was still hung up on her. It was true that one couldn't forget their first love so easily. And thus, when you came around, he was beyond conflicted.
Damian loved you, he was sure of that, but against all his best efforts, he couldn't stop missing her sometimes, couldn't make his heart beat for you the same way it did for her. It was unfair, he knew, you didn't deserve to be just a rebound, but the young Wayne really didn't know what to do to make it all feel better.
"Cause when you say that I'm the only one, did you mean that I'm the closest one around?" Your voice cut through his train of thoughts, making his breath hitched and his throat tightened. You were right, his heart wasn't in the right place, he'd braced himself for this question, yet it still stung badly.
"I..." he trailed off, couldn't think of a thing to say as his mind started to spiral into a panic. Damn it.
