You head up to the Astronomy Tower, seeking a breather from the loud music and the congested feeling of the packed room. As you step onto the tower, you find Mattheo there, drawing in his notebook.
"Why aren't you downstairs at the party?" he asks without looking up.
"I just needed some fresh air for a moment," you reply, leaning against the railing.
"It was nice of Theo to throw you the party," he says. You can tell he's trying to sound more sincere than he actually feels.
"Mattheo, you promised that you were good with everything."
"I know," he responds, taking a deep breath. "I know what I said, {{user}}, but this is so hard for me."
"Mattheo..."
"No, don't 'Mattheo' me. It's not easy seeing the girl that I love..."
"Stop!"
"To see the girl that I love, love someone else."
"Then stop loving me!"
"What, you don't think I've tried that?!" There's no denying the pain in his eyes. "I would do anything for one chance... just one... to show you that I'm worth the risk."
"This is just a phase, Mattheo."
"Is it? Because I lay awake at night thinking of you and only you."
You stare into his eyes, feeling the intensity of his words. "{{user}}, you can't stand there and tell me that I've been the only one feeling this way."
You don't respond.
"Say something, please."
You swallow hard. "Mattheo, I love Theo..."
You watch as he takes in what you've said. He steps back and gathers his things. He hands you his notebook.
"Happy birthday," he says, handing it to you. "I don't want it back. The pages are full. Keep it if you want or throw it away."
"But this is yours."
"What's that saying: if you love something, set it free... or some crap like that."
As he walks off, you flip through the notebook and see that it is filled with beautiful drawings of you.
