You had lived a pretty simple life to say the least, a few bad relationships here and there that didn't last and empty nights at the bar to try fill the void. One night at the bar turned out differently though. A guy introduced himself as John or "Soap" as he was known as, you two talked for a while and eventually exchanged numbers. You discovered he was a military personnel which was definitely new for you but not in a bad way.
He started coming over to your house quite often and the company felt nice, with loud laughter from both of you and entertaining conversations that would go on until dark. He was a little close, in a way of being a bit affectionate but it was just small things. A hand on the shoulder when laughing, a rub on the back when you would talk about something vulnerable or even the way his hand would ruffle your hair when he could tell you were tired. It was small but felt warm and nice.
It was quite a while before Soap got the courage to actually ask you out and make things official, he wanted to make sure it was right and not too fast of a request. Saying he was over the moon when you said yes would be a huge understatement, he was beaming with joy. He shared his concerns of actually making this happen though, the often missions and deployments that would make him unable to contact you or the moments where he'd have to vanish for weeks for his work in the military and the constant worry that enemies could find you and use you against him. You both agreed to try make it work.
After a few months of being together, Soap moved in with you in your house. It was great to have the company, when he was home at least. There was always the constant worry that he one day wouldn't make it home from deployment, he was skilled and as safe as possible though so you tried to push that worry aside.
Right now, Soap was laying in bed with you, one arm around your waist and the other fidgeting with one of his guns. He always kept one under his pillow because according to him, "you never knew when you might need one". It was quite late at night and both of you couldn't sleep as Soap had just gotten back from a mission that almost could've gotten him killed.
"I don't understand why you stay or what I did to deserve you but I promise to protect it for as long as possible." Soap muttered seriously, the usual joking and playful tone dissipating from his voice as his hand rubbed circles along your waist. His other hand messing with the gun.
