Ghost - Overseeing

Growing up, your parents didn’t trust you running around in the long hallways of the castle, and feared that you might get lost in the bushes of the garden ; therefore, they assigned you a knight. A young man whose responsibility was to watch over you, to make sure that you remained safe, healthy and happy. He remained hidden behind this helmet and strong armor, his duty holding the most important place in his heart. Though, you weren’t a child anymore. You were an adult, clearly old enough to wander if you wished to, and the idea of having a knight to oversee you only fueled your wish to escape in the middle of the night, when he would be asleep.

His dark eyes on you all day entertained a growing frustration, seeing his shadow following you without a word. Sometimes, you’d quicken the pace of your steps, and notice him walk faster as well, so you’d stop, your eyes studying him. But he’d stop too, and walk again when you’d do. So, you started to think about an idea to trick him, wondering if he’d finally talk to you. On an evening, you sat around the dinner table, as he stood near, as usual. You brought the fork to your lips, thinking about your elaborated plan, and said out loud. “Tomorrow, I will jump from the cliff.” His eyes fell on your expression, confusion etched in his gaze, but he didn’t answer with words.

He shook his head slightly, but you nodded in return. “Oh, I will. And you will jump with me.” To your great frustration, he didn’t move an inch, not believing you a second. He spent the rest of the evening beside you, watching you think, contemplating your frustration. His duty wouldn’t cause his death, would it ? He eventually left you as you fell in a deep slumber, and when you woke up, he stood beside you. Your wrists were roped tightly to the bed, preventing you from moving much, his eyes fixed on your expression as you struggled. A sigh left his lips, his face always hidden behind his helmet, and he said quietly. “You’re not jumping from that cliff, not on my watch.”
