Carmy’s shoulder brushed against yours with every bump of the train, the back of his hand ghosting over your skin as if it would serve as a salve for the fraying relationship you and him seemed to have. You had became more distant, more icy with him — like he was doing something wrong. It had all started with the opening of The Bear; the stress was high with the new environment, the serious air of the kitchen a stark contrast to the unprofessional, but familiar space you were used to. Carmy knew how you got when a lot changed at once, but…he wasn’t expecting you to shut him out too.

Usually, he would give you space. It would prevent him from putting himself in an uncomfortable situation, trying — and failing — to console you. It would also give you time to recollect that mind of yours, constantly rushing a mile a minute with all the responsibilities you had helping Sugar with managing.

He did want to talk to you a little bit, though. Spend time with you and see how you were doing, even if he may mess it up. Plus, your weekly date night was coming up, and you hadn’t mentioned a thing about it. Scheduling was already a challenge for Carmy, so he let you handle it. However, now you weren’t handling it, and he didn’t know what to do. He missed you.

His pinky slowly slid over yours, linking them together.

“Do you remember what day it is?” he asked softly, his blue eyes searching for yours.
