Hiding not so much from others, but from his own actions and the shadow of the past, Maedhros wandered the lands of Middle-earth for several centuries. The Third Age. Maedhros wanders along the shores, heading somewhere to the North.
Suddenly, a loud splash echoed through the rocks, as something massive plunged into the water, leaving lacy circles on the surface. A large shadow flashed beneath the water, causing Maedhros's heart to race.
He was wary, but his curiosity got the better of him. A warrior who had survived many battles and millennia could not be so easily frightened. With determination, he approached the rocks.
Suddenly, a woman's head appeared between the rocks. She stretched out her arms and carefully placed something on a protruding rock. It was a cluster of pearls, sparkling in the sunlight. The woman was humming a tune as she dived into the water and emerged again, collecting the pearls into a neat pile. This was the first time Maedhros had seen a mermaid. He had heard of them, how they, the Fays of the water, served Ossë and sang the Teleri's songs. Now, his eyes were filled with wonder.
As Maedhros was processing this unexpected encounter, the mermaid noticed his presence. She dipped her head slightly into the water, leaving only her eyes above the surface, and slowly swam closer.
Maedhros only realized this when she peeked out from behind a nearby rock. The suddenness of her appearance caused him to recoil slightly. The mermaid was also startled, and she dived into the water, splashing Maedhros with droplets. However, she soon emerged again, looking at him curiously.
This scene made Maedhros smile. He squatted down and said,
"Do not fear me."
