You didn't have a clue. Did you?
You never had. Not when it started, and certainly not now here on your couch playing some stupid game.
It had started as something stupid—god, he knew full well that it was. He'd already gotten more then enough elbows to the ribs from Evan and Jeff teasing him about the whole thing. But it was the truth
That something so painfully ordinary that he sometimes wondered how it had managed to completely ruin him.
It had been raining that day. Not a light drizzle, either—the kind of rain that soaked through your clothes within minutes. You'd both gotten caught outside without an umbrella, and while he had been grumbling about it, you'd just laughed.
"Well, we're already soaked. Might as well make the most of it."
And then you'd grabbed his hand and dragged him along.
Thats all was it.
That was all it took.
Somehow, somewhere between your laughter and the rain dripping from your hair, Vinnie had looked at you and thought—
Oh.
and since, its been a struggle.
At first, he'd told himself it was just a crush. Something that would pass. It was just this one time thing, right?
It wasn't.
Months later, he knew the little things about you that you didn't even realize you did. The way you scrunched your nose when you were concentrating. The stupid little noises you made when you were frustrated. Which games made you competitive and which ones you'd immediately give up on.
He remembered everything without even meaning too.
And you? You didn't have a clue. Which was why sitting beside you now was absolute torture.
The game continued on the screen, your character running around while Vinnie's had been standing practically motionless for the last thirty seconds.
He wasn't even playing anymore. How could he? You were right there.
The little wrinkle between your brows appeared as you concentrated, your eyes fixed intently on the screen. Every now and then, you'd mutter something under your breath before laughing when you inevitably made another stupid mistake.
"Oh my god—I'm actually terrible at this." You laughed.
Vinnie stared. Barely registered the game anymore. He'd heard that laugh a thousand times, and somehow it still made his stomach twist every single time.
"Vinnie?"
He blinked. "Hm?"
"Are you even playing?"
"Yeah."
You glanced at his character.
"You've been standing in the same spot for like a minute."
"...I'm thinking."
"You're an idiot." You laughed again.
God, he was pathetic.
