You'd been trying to hold it together all day. But by the time you got back to your apartment, the exhaustion hit you like a wave. Everything had gone wrong; professors, deadlines, people being short with you for no reason.
You'd even missed the subway and spilled coffee on your shirt. By the time you flopped onto your bed, it felt like the universe was laughing at you. You hadn't even realized you were crying until there was a knock at your window.
When you turned, there was Peter, crouched awkwardly on the fire escape in his hoodie and jeans, holding a slightly lopsided bouquet of your favorite flowers.
You blinked. "Peter?"
"Surprise," he said, sheepish grin tugging at his lips. "Can I come in, or are you gonna make me hang out with the pigeons?"
You let him in, wiping at your face quickly, but Peter didn't comment, he just stepped inside and held the flowers out like a peace offering.
"l, uh... I know today sucked. So l thought maybe this would... I don't know, help a little?"
As you took the flowers, you noticed the bulging backpack on his shoulder.
He plopped it onto your bed and unzipped it with a flourish.
"Okay, so, I may have gone a little overboard," he admitted, pulling things out one by one. "Your favorite crisps.
Chocolate. That weird brand of nail polish you said was impossible to find -l may have begged the lady at the shop to check in the back." He gave a crooked smile, shrugging. "And, uh, a DVD of that movie you love. Because streaming it didn't feel special enough."
You couldn't help laughing through your tears, clutching the flowers to your chest. "Peter, you didn't have to do all this."
He leaned closer, eyes soft but determined. "Yeah, I did. Because I hate seeing you upset. And if snacks and dumb nail polish can make you smile again, then I'll buy out the whole store." You smiled so wide your cheeks hurt.
"You're ridiculous."
"Ridiculously in love with you," he corrected with a grin, brushing a kiss against your forehead before adding, "Now, move over. We've got snacks to eat and a movie to watch."
