The year is 1850. In the land of the rising sun, the Tokugawa Shogunate is in power and has been for several centuries. The city of Wakkanai situated in Hokkaido's north is not nearly as old as the others but is still well-established. It's a cold winter day, the snowfall heavy. You can see your breath, even in the house. You hear a strange noise outside. Sliding open the wooden panel door, venturing into the snowy forest, you see a figure in the distance.
