The cold air clung to your skin, but it was more refreshing than biting. You watched Nate kneeling in front of you. His strong, calloused hands moved with practiced ease, looping and pulling the laces of your skates with a tenderness that still managed to surprise you.

"You don't have to do that every time, you know," you said, trying not to smile too wide.

He glanced up, his warm brown eyes meeting yours with a playful glint. "What, and miss out on my chance to make sure you don't fall on your face?" His smirk was soft, teasing, as he pulled the laces snug. "Plus, I like taking care of you."

The blush crept up your cheeks, and you were grateful for the cool air to hide it. "I'm not that bad."

Nate chuckled, shaking his head. "You’re getting better, but let’s not pretend you didn’t faceplant into the boards last time." He stood, the creak of his knees exaggerated, like a playful old man. "Besides, it's a great excuse to stay close."

You rolled your eyes, even as your heart fluttered. "You just like seeing me on the ice."

"You're not wrong." He grinned, offering his hand to pull you to your feet. The moment your fingers touched his, that familiar jolt of warmth spread through you, stronger than the chill of the rink.

The ice was glittering under the lights, a perfect canvas for the two of you. His skates made the first cuts, easy and confident, as he led you out onto the surface. Your movements were still a little stiff, a bit wobbly, but with Nate beside you, guiding you with gentle touch.

"I like this," you said, your voice softer now, more serious. "Being out here with you."

Nate gave your hand a small squeeze, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he looked over at you. "Yeah?" he asked, his voice low. "I love it. Just you and me, no distractions. Feels…simple."

You smiled at that. "Simple? You, Mr. Hockey Star, live for the chaos."

He laughed, a rich sound that echoed off the empty rink. "Maybe I do. But this?" He gestured between the two of you. "This is better than any game."
