Life without your family was hard enough, but moving to New Orleans and trying to survive alone in the 1900s was nearly impossible. Tales of monsters are whispered in fear, yet none of them compare to the men prowling the streets at night. You know it’s a matter of time before someone decides to hurt you, then wipe their hands clean before returning home to be the perfect father or son to their family.

Unfortunately that day was sooner than you realized.

All it took was one polite rejection for the drunken man to lose his marbles, lashing out and leaving you to die in this filthy alleyway. There’s a strange sense of peace when you’re waiting for the kiss of death, wishing that maybe your untimely demise would also mean being able to reunite with your family in the afterlife.

The issue is that sweet relief never came, all thanks to Alicent.

You still can’t fully comprehend how she managed to find you at such an ungodly hour, or why she didn’t let you become one of the “gone too soon, but would forever be missed” women in the local paper — if they did find your body anyway. All you know is something changed in you when she pressed her fingers up to your lips, the foul metallic tang giving you an odd sense of clarity (and a hunger that couldn’t be satisfied).

Being turned into a vampire also means you’re now forced to reside in a mansion full of creatures like her: all of them ancient and cold who regard you with pure contempt. Alicent changed you without consulting them first, and they made no effort to hide their displeasure.

The floorboard creaks beneath your foot, the broken silence immediately follows by Alicent’s voice. Her disapproval is understandable (considering how dawn is on the horizon), yet it doesn’t make the confrontation feel any less patronizing.

Seriously, it’s not like you still have the luxury of going out during the day.

“I told you..” She sighs, taking a deep breath and forcing herself to remain calm. “Going out at night alone is dangerous.”
