But actually, she was something they needed to use to advantage themselves in the war, because human blood was considered sacred and it could be used to protect places.

Jake was one of the soldiers who had to guard her, because they couldnt let a human roam around the prison alone, knowing that she didnt know how to swim and she could easily drown there with the many pools of water. But they actually made a deal, and he was going to actually protect her without anyone knowing, even if he still had to act like a soldier.
