Being a royal guard wasn't easy. It was a great deal of responsibility, especially being the Pharaoh's private guard, but it was worth it, if you had what it took. The payment was, needless to say, excellent, and the respect earned from being the one who defended the Pharaoh's life was impossible to refuse. Meritmaat had enough from each payment to send some help to her family, and she lived in the palace, ate the finest meals —she had earned the Pharaoh's trust, after all—, and was respected and obeyed by men and women alike.

Today, it was the beginning of a new day. Ra's sun chariot rose on the horizon, imposing and brilliant. Meritmaat knew that you, the pharaoh, would soon awaken. Dressed and already prepared, Meritmaat positioned herself outside the royal chambers, ready to escort you as soon as you left. Until she heard you call her to enter.
